Normal Measurements in Abdominal Ultrasonography in Adults

*Abdominal aorta  
 luminal diameter; < 2.5cm (cranial portion)
                    < 2.0cm (caudal portion)
                    2.5cm-3.0cm=ectasia
                    > 3.0cm =aneurysm

*Adrenal glands  
maximal size; < 5.0cm (length)
               < 1.0cm(width of an individual limb)

*Billary ducts      
 bile duct; < 0.6cm (if gallbladder is present)
            < 0.9cm 9status post cholecystectomy)
 intrahepatic; < 0.4cm

*Endometrium
   
 width (both layers); < 15.0mm (premenopausal)
                      < 8.0mm  (postmenopausal)

*Gallbladder          
   wall thickness; < 0,4cm (postprandial up to 0.7cm)
                   <11.0cm longitudial (preprandial)
   maximal diameter; < 4.0cm transverse (preprandial)

*Hepatic veins      
 luminal width; < 0.6cm (distal to the last confluence before
                          the inferior vena cava)
                >0.6cm =>right cardiac insufficiency

*Inferior vena cava  
 luminal width; < 2.0cm (< 2.5cm in young athletes)
                  (with collapse during forced expiration)
                > 2.5cm without expiration collapse =>
                  suspicious of right cardiac insufficiency

*IUD-fundus distance                  
                < 20.0 mm (if increased : dislodged)
*IUD-endometrium distance          
                < 5.0mm

*Kidneys  
               
  maximal size; 10.0-12.0 cm (lengthwise)
                4.0-6.0 cm 9  transverse)
  respiratory mobility; 3.0-7.0 cm
  parenchymal width; 1.3-2.5 cm
  parenchyma-pyelon index; >1.6:1 (under 30 years)
                          1.2:1-1.6:1(31-60 years)
                           >1.1:1  9 above 60 years)

*Liver                        
 size in right MCL; < 13.0 cm (craniocaudal)
                    < 15.0 cm (depending on body habitus)
                             
*Lymph nodes            
  maximal diameter; < 1.0 cm

*Pancrease
  size of the head;< 3.0 cm
  size of the body ;< 2 cm
  size of the tail ;< 2cm
  luminal diameter of the duct;< 0.2 cm

*Portal vein
  luminal width; < 1.3 cm
                 > 1.5 cm => portal hypertension

*Prostate gland
  size; < 5.0 cm (transverse)
        < 3.0 cm (craniocaudal)
        < 3.0 cm (anteroposterior, sagittal)
  volume ; < 25 ml

*Spleen
  maximal size; < 11.0 cm (length)
                < 7.0 cm (width)
                < 4.0 cm (depth, measured between splenic hilum and surface)

*Splenic vein
 luminal width ; < 1.0 cm
                 > 1.2 cm =>portal hypertension or splenomegaly

*Superior mesenteric artery
 luminal diameter; < 0.5 cm

*Thyroid gland
 size; 4.0-7.0 cm (craniocaudal)
       1.0 cm-3.0 cm(transverse)
       1.0 cm-2.0 cm(sagittal)
 volume(both lobes combined):< 20ml(women)
                             < 25ml(men)

*Urinary bladder
 wall thickness; < 0.4 cm (if bladder is full)
                 < 0.8 cm (after voiding)
 postvoid residual; < 100ml
 volume;<550ml(women)
        <750ml(men)

*Uterus
 maximal s
ize; 5.0 cm-8.0 cm longitudianal (nullipara)
               1.5-3.0 cm width

*Yolk sac
 diameter; 3.0-7.0 mm
